My name is Nicholas and I am a quadriplegic. In April, 2012 I was involved in a dirt biking accident that would change my life drastically. Since I was about 13 years old, my passion has always been riding dirt bikes with my friends. I was a healthy young man graduating from high school in June of 2012. I had a contract to go into the Navy August, 2012. My dream was to be a Navy SEAL for which I was training hard with a group of young men in the hopes of being accepted to the SEALS once boot camp was finished. My plans changed. I had a tragic accident on April 7th, 2012 which left me as a C-5 quadriplegic.
I try to stay very active. I worked with a trainer 3 days a week to build up my upper body strength and am now in a manual wheel chair. I am in a FES rowing program at Spaulding Rehab, Last summer I attended Empower Camp at Stoney Brook, NY and have been accepted again this year. Last summer thanks to family, friends, and the camp I experienced paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming in a pool, riding a bike and camping. During the winter I went on a skiing weekend with a group from camp
I was trained to be a marine mechanic, and loved tinkering with engines. After much thought I decided to go back to school for construction technology. Hopefully I will be learning to drive in the near future.
I am very excited that I have been approved to get a service dog from NEADS that will be trained for my needs. It will make me feel so much more independent and be able to do more on my own. The dog will be a great companion for me and will give my family peace of mind that when I am out of their sight my dog is 'watching' me.
As I move forward I am hoping one day I will be able to live on my own. I stay very positive and am living as normal a life as possible. I am so glad I can do this with a dog by my side.
