Assistant Breeding and Puppy Development Coordinator

Overview of the position: Assists in managing all areas of the breeding program and early canine life in NEADS Early Learning Center and Nursery.

Primary Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

The ABPDC works with the BPDC to manage all aspects of early canine life, which includes but is not limited to, pre-whelp and post-whelp care of adult mother dogs, raising litters of puppies, starting socializations in the nursery and continuing those socializations in the Early Learning Center, data entry, managing puppy intake/outtake, managing and training all staff and volunteers within each facility, developing puppy profiles of each puppy to communicate to trainers for puppy placement and working with vet staff to manage the proper health care for each puppy. This position also assists the BPDC and vet staff with all aspects of breeding, included but not limited to ovulation timing, confirming and monitoring pregnancy, whelping puppies and handling and shipping semen.

Position Requirements:

The ABPDC must have excellent communication skills, be able to work well independently and in a team setting, be flexible with changes in daily routine, be comfortable working in loud environments and have a good understanding of canine behavior, reproduction and husbandry. This position requires working occasional holidays, early mornings or late evening shifts, staying overnight during whelps and snowstorms, and splitting on call duty with the BPDC.


Bachelor’s degree in Animal behavior or a related field or equivalent experience required. Experience working in animal husbandry or care preferred. Experience with breeding and whelping a plus.

Physical Demands: This position is a mix of office work and hands-on work with dogs. The ABPDC must be able to lift 50 lbs and working 12-18 hour shifts during whelps.

Work Environment: The ABPDC must work in both indoor and outdoor settings all year-round and be comfortable working in a quarantine setting and following proper quarantine protocols.
