I started losing my hearing about 15 years ago. I use to hunt and fish and when my hearing started going I quit doing those things because I couldn’t identify what was around me and it was not safe for me to continue doing so.  While I was living in PA our company scheduled a hearing test and the lady that took my test asked me how I am getting by not hearing. I didn’t realize how bad my hearing loss was until I failed the test terribly.

For years i would just agree and nod at people when they spoke to me like I knew what they were saying, but that didn’t always work.

I went to see a hearing specialist and obtained my first set of hearing aids.  Using them for so many years I found out that I was still losing my hearing and after a few more years I had to obtain new/stronger aids.  In 2016 I had my first stapedectomy in my left ear and gained back a little of my hearing, than in 2017 I had my right ear operated on, gaining back little as well.

I struggle on a daily basis hearing things that I always took for granted like the birds chirping, a knock at my door or someone calling my name.  I have found that I don’t like to be in crowds and keep to myself for the most part. I go to work everyday just like everyone else does that I work with, but I struggle on the phone trying to listen to people on the other end, I don’t hear my name being called out by my boss and my co-worker will clue me in that I am being called. I sleep at night with my hearing aids in because I am afraid I will miss either someone breaking in, a knock at the door or even the fire alarm going off.

I feel as though the NEADS dog will help me gain my confidence in myself again and I wont be afraid to be alone. That this dog will alert me to these things that I struggle with on a daily basis and I will be able to relax at night knowing that I do have someone there to help me.

*NEADS clients pledge to raise a minimum of $8,000 for the organization, thus allowing us to fulfill our mission of placing Service Dogs with individuals who benefit from them the most.  Each donation ensures that NEADS will continue to change lives with our World Class Service Dogs.
