Donna Kerr & Lily

From: North Carolina
Program: Service Dog
Minimum Goal: $8,000 | Amount Raised:$5,655

Since I’ve gotten Lily my life has gotten so much better!  I have become more independent and sure of myself.  It’s wonderful to have someone around all the time to help me,  sometimes without even having to ask.  It’s like we’ve been partnered a lot longer than just a couple months.

I have Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy type 2I (LGMD 2I), I am also a Breast Cancer Survivor. I live in a very small town in North Carolina. I live in farm country, rolling fields of corn and cotton, one of the best places I have ever lived. I work part-time in a bookstore at a small Community College a couple towns over.

Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy type 2I (LGMD 2I) is a rare and genetic disease, there is no cure. What LGMD 2I does is wastes the muscles away in my arms and legs over time. My quality of life and energy levels diminishes over time to the point where I have to use things like a cane, walker or scooter. When I really get tired, I constantly drop things or trip and fall (recently I fell and broke my arm).  The little things that most people take for granted, like getting up off a chair, getting out of bed, off the floor or just picking up the pen that just flew out of your hand is a major hardship in my life.

I was finding that I was staying home and not working, but that was the problem, I was staying home A LOT.  I only went out when I absolutely had to and usually with someone who would be there “just in case” I got into a situation where I needed help in one way or another.  When I get into a situation where I need assistance, a service dog that is specifically trained for me can do several things to get me the help I need. Lily is able to help me with all of the “normal things we do in our everyday life” that have become increasingly more difficult for me to do and yet still feel independent.

I am very excited to have gotten Lily my Service Dog from NEADS!

*NEADS clients pledge to raise a minimum of $8,000 for the organization, thus allowing us to fulfill our mission of placing Service Dogs with individuals who benefit from them the most.  Each donation ensures that NEADS will continue to change lives with our World Class Service Dogs.
