Joanne Sykes is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor working with close to 600 5th and 6th grade students in the Town of Falmouth, MA. She has worked as an educator, counselor, and mentor for over 16 years and has continued her own professional development, receiving a Masters of Emergency Management in 2017.
Joanne’s focus is on helping students who are struggling with social and emotional challenges and mental illness, while continuing to provide support each day to the general education population of students. Sadly the level of emotional distress, anxiety, grief following the sudden death of a parent or sibling, continues to increase. The negative impacts of emotional illness, trauma, and chronic worry interfere with students’ ability to succeed in the learning environment.
Joanne is eager to explore new modalities to help her connect with her students and is a candidate for a NEADS Assistance Dog to work side by side with her in her role as School Adjustment Counselor. Additionally, Joanne is a volunteer with the Cape and Islands Medical Reserve Corps and assists with emergency response activities following disasters on Cape Cod. Her hope is to incorporate her dog into her psychological first aid emergency response efforts.
*NEADS clients pledge to raise a minimum of $8,000 for the organization, thus allowing us to fulfill our mission of placing Service Dogs with individuals who benefit from them the most. Each donation ensures that NEADS will continue to change lives with our World Class Service Dogs.
On our donation form, pick the name of the client you want to sponsor under the Program Menu and check whether or not we can share your contact information with the client. Client fundraising totals are manually updated weekly (not automatically) which allows 100% of each donation to be allocated towards each client’s fundraising goal.
