It’s been a long time and a long way since being a daily runner and a passionate fan of classical music, even owning my own stereo components store. Hello everyone. My name is Joseph Sala. It has been for me a fortunate life having a number of varied and, I believe, successful careers. Toward the end of my career, I had an accelerated hearing loss that began to interfere with my life. After an early retirement, I found very rewarding work in a caring and comfort home for the terminally ill. Perhaps it was my passion all along. My deafness resulted from the use of an ototoxic drug given to me when I was a child. Gradually my deafness increased until I became totally deaf. After several years, I made a decision to have cochlear implants—almost a happy ending, except that occasional processor malfunctions and breakdowns left me profoundly deaf and unable to help the people at the caring and comfort home, as well as being totally dependent on others to be my ears and anticipate my needs. A Service Dog for Hearing would not only help me continue my service to the terminally ill but bring a measure of joy to their final days.
