On September 27, guests gathered at the elegantly decorated Exchange Center in Boston’s seaport district, eager to support NEADS and celebrate its mission. Our 9th Get Dressed. Give Back. fundraiser was an amazing night thanks to all who came, donated, and took part in this “fabulous event for a fabulous cause.”
THE PROGRAM. The evening’s program began with opening remarks from Keith McGilvery, News Anchor at Fox 61, followed by keynote speaker Karen Anderson, investigative reporter for WCVB, who shared the story of her first encounter with NEADS. Calling it “one of my most memorable days,” she recounted meeting Patrick Downes, Jessica Kensky, and Jessica’s NEADS Service Dog, Rescue in 2013. “The Worcester firefighters had donated money to name Rescue in honor of their fallen colleague, and Patrick and Jessica brought Rescue to the firehouse to meet them. Jessica was initially hesitant to have cameras capturing the moment, but realized how important it was that people know about NEADS so agreed to have us cover the visit. When Jessica walked in with Rescue, I witnessed an incredible bond form over a dog who not only helped change Jessica’s life but who also helped the firefighters heal through the gift they made in honor of their fallen firefighter. It was a testament to the power of trust, not just between a person and their service dog, but between an organization and the community it serves. My relationship with NEADS began with trust,” Karen explained, “and it reaffirmed for me how the media, at its best, can be a force for good in the world.”
The program continued with a special recognition of retiring CEO, Gerry DeRoche. Cathy Zemaitis, Chief Development and Programs Officer, spoke about how when Gerry joined NEADS 14 years ago, he brought not only a wealth of experience but also a vision that would shape the future of the organization. “Under your leadership, NEADS has not only thrived but has grown into a beacon of innovation and compassion. Your dedication to our mission has been nothing short of inspirational,” Cathy said, “from completely revitalizing and reinventing the NEADS campus to setting a new standard of excellence and significantly advancing our ability to be a thought leader in the service dog industry. We are recognized worldwide for the high standards for ourselves and our World Class Service Dogs, and as you leave, it’s our responsibility – staff, donors, volunteers – to uphold these standards and never take the path of its resistance.”
Gerry was presented with a unique framed artwork, a fun depiction of his signature colorful socks, painted by NEADS Creative Media Specialist, Lori Barrett. The piece served as a lighthearted tribute to Gerry’s personality and his lasting impact on the organization. The evening was a resounding success, filled with heartfelt tributes, inspiring stories, and a renewed commitment to NEADS’ mission of changing lives through its World Class Service Dogs.
